6ft Rod Project
Constraints: 1-week duration
No Alteration of the ground
The work may take up no more than 2’ diameter area
Glue is Permissible
With this project I decided I was going to use my skills as a child of prop making and countless days in the garage just making props similar to this design. My intial idea was a tower of sorts, being more architectural instead of scultural. I wanted to take advantage of the scale and make the tower feel giant if looking at the intended scale of the tower.
I went about constructing the tower, by going to various stores, and buying cheap toys, and misc. objects with the intention of using the shapes and volumes to create the "greeble" or intricate nature of sci-fi buildings. I took this a step further by purchasing a printer at goodwill. Luckily it was very cheap so I felt no heartache in destroying the printer to use the parts inside to glue onto the tower. This worked just how I had hoped with the many parts I purchased and tore apart from the printer masking more of the shape and highlighting a complex-looking tower. Before the tower was painted, I'd say I wasn't completely confident my idea worked, but I also trusted the process. And as soon as I put on a layer of black paint, and then metallic paint it instantly transformed. By putting uniform colors on the tower, the parts blended into one another, making them feel like they were really part of the structure. I finished the tower by adding the detail of some orange/copper colors scattered throughout the tower creating a rusty/more authentic metallic look
Bach Project
Prompt: In our groups, listen to Bach's Goldenberg variations 1-9 and describe any emotions, environments, etc. that are felt with each variation. This will go towards making a visual piece in reference of the variations. From making a visual piece, as a group make an animation of your one chosen variation
For visual pieces, I wanted to do them in Blender because I felt it would be more challenging to show my abstract ideas with ink. I chose to represent Variation 5 by taking its notes and copying the slope of its elevation and descent like a sound wave.
Members of the team made very vivid imagery of the Variation we chose, with an emphasis on tendrils/whispy lines. These served as a great starting point to then recreate in 3D.
Being that it was all abstract I knew assigning people to make one or more assets would allow me to just throw them in and animate them, and the focal points of the animation would be done.
To make the Animation’s environment I used the technique of kitbashing, where I had many assets and used them together to make a whole piece that appears unique and complex, similar to the rod project.
The main blue tunnel was made using geometry nodes in blender which I made following some videos. That was by far the hardest part. The rest was simple when it came to just adding more and more assets. In the end, I had added enough where I felt it represented the reference drawings well and felt very abstract and vivid itself.
This project was the school theater production where I had the position of Head Foreman. The medium for this project was woodworking and acrylic paints. The set construction was a collaborative team effort, however, my job was to construct all the stairs on set. which consisted of the main staircase to the left, the staircase on the far right, and a staircase backstage to the upper level of the set. I was also tasked with constructing all the handrails and I assisted with painting the set as a whole. The dimensions of the stage are 100 ft (W) by 30 ft (D) by 25 ft (H).
